What are purity rings?

A purity ring is a symbol of the wearers promise, either private or public, to remain 'pure' until a specified time or event in the future. They are a mark of sexual abstinence.

Popularised during the 1990s in the US, the ring is typically purchased by or given to teenage girls to wear on their left-hand ring finger, where a wedding or engagement ring is traditionally worn.

Though there are no particular styles associated with purity rings, many christians use rings that include a cross as a sign of their promise to God to abstain from sex until marriage. Solitaire-style rings, with a single diamond, are avoided because of their association with engagement rings, but plain bands are often used, which eventually become the wedding ring.

Hannah Montana star and recent pop sensation Miley Cyrus (pictured right) has perhaps the current highest profile purity ring. “Even at my age, a lot of girls are starting to fall,” she says. “And I think if [remaining a virgin] is a commitment girls make, that’s great.”
